At St Ippolyts, we aim to develop curious, knowledgeable and thoughtful children who understand the world around them, how it has changed over time and their place within it. Our Humanities curriculum has been carefully adapted to reflect our school, our local area and the experiences of our pupils. We draw on Kapow Primary and Oak National Academy as planning resources, selecting, adapting and sequencing units to meet the needs of our mixed-age and single-age classes and to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum. Where possible, we make meaningful links to our local area and community, helping children connect their learning to places, people and events that are familiar to them before broadening their understanding to the wider United Kingdom and world.
In History, pupils develop a secure chronological understanding of British, local and world history, exploring significant events, individuals, civilisations, migration, settlement, conflict and change. They learn to use evidence and sources, consider cause, consequence, change and continuity, and make connections between different periods of history. In Geography, pupils develop their understanding of places, people, environments and the processes that shape our world. They build knowledge from their local area to the wider United Kingdom and world, while developing geographical skills through map work, fieldwork, data collection and the use of geographical resources.
Across both subjects, key knowledge, vocabulary and skills are revisited and progressively developed, with opportunities for retrieval helping pupils to make connections and retain their learning. In the EYFS, Humanities learning is rooted in Understanding the World, where children develop their awareness of the past, their local environment and the wider world through first-hand experiences, continuous provision and meaningful interactions. Through our Humanities curriculum, we want children to be curious about the world, ask thoughtful questions, consider different perspectives, use evidence to develop their understanding and appreciate how people, places and societies are connected and change over time.
